Making Flof used vacuum forming to create custom chocolate molds inspired by Star Wars. Learn how LDPE and PET sheets can be used for unique food molding projects.
Vacuum forming is an incredibly versatile technique with countless applications in food molding. From high-end dessert competitions to professional chocolatiers, people are using vacuum formers to craft custom molds that add a unique touch to their culinary creations.
One brilliant example of this is a pop culture-inspired project by French creator Making Flof (Florian). Known for his fun and innovative creations, Florian took inspiration from one of cinema’s most iconic moments: Han Solo frozen in carbonite from Star Wars.
To recreate this scene in edible form, Florian first 3D printed the frozen Han Solo shape. He then used his desktop vacuum former to shape a chocolate mold from an LDPE sheet.
Just like our PET sheets, our LDPE sheets are food-safe, but they have the added benefit of being more flexible. This extra flexibility makes it easier to remove the finished chocolate from the mold without damaging the detail. Perfect for complex shapes like Han Solo’s carbonite prison!

However, the choice between LDPE and PET for chocolate molds depends on your project. Flexible LDPE is great for solid chocolates that need to pop out easily, while a more rigid PET mold is better if you’re making hollow shapes, like Easter eggs, where you need to swirl and coat the inside without the mold flexing too much.
Not content with just the chocolate, Florian completed the project with custom Star Wars-themed packaging.

This clever use of vacuum forming for chocolate molds shows how digital making and pop culture can come together to create fun, shareable projects that delight fans and makers alike.
